Featured piece — Mini Monoliths

The Moai

Easter Island  ·  c. 1250–1500 AD  ·  Purpose Unknown

887 massive statues standing 5,000 km from anyone else.

The Moai represent the silent guardians and powerful protectors. Facing inland with the ocean at their backs, they care for their families, not the rest of the world. Calm, stoic, unmoved by what ended their civilization, they accept what life throws at them.

The last peak of one civilization, they are a reminder of self-resilience and choosing your community.

The Tlaloc

Chapultepec, Mexico  ·  Aztec  ·  God of Rain

168 tonnes of rain god, moving through Mexico City in 1964. It stormed the day it arrived.

Tlaloc is the powerful personification of water. The difference between famine and abundance. The sky that decides whether the field lives or dies.

Some forces don't care if you believe in them.

Pillar 43

Göbekli Tepe, Türkiye  ·  c. 9600 BCE  ·  Oldest known structure

Built 6,000 years before Stonehenge. "Before agriculture", before cities, before anything we assumed was required.

Pillar 43 at Göbekli Tepe is carved with symbols nobody fully agrees on, but it seems connected to the turning of time. The site was used to make beer and then deliberately buried.

The Olmec

Gulf Coast, Mexico  ·  c. 1200–400 BCE  ·  17 heads found

17 colossal heads. Each one different. Each one a statement.

With unknown creators, they were left across the Gulf Coast of Mexico. They are not gods. They are portraits. Of someone important enough to be remembered at 20 tonnes.

Mini Monoliths

Stonehenge

Wiltshire, England  ·  c. 2500 BCE  ·  Equinox Marker

A stone circle in the middle of a field. Dolmens balancing lintels. Raised at civilizational scale, aligned with the solstice, transported from Wales.

Nobody fully explains who or why. The explanations that exist are just convincing enough to stop most people asking.

The Eroded Sphinx

Giza Plateau, Egypt  ·  Chimaera of riddles;·  Weathered by time

No nose. No inscriptions. No builder identified. History has been trying to explain it for millenia.

The mystery is not who it looks like but what it looked like before.

The Great Sphinx

Giza Plateau, Egypt  ·  No inscription. No builder. No date.

The head is too small for the body. The erosion patterns don't match the official timeline. No inscription identifies its builder or purpose.

History is least convincing where it sounds most sure of itself.
